Post subject: | Fish Glue Reacting Oddly to EM6000 |
I just started using fish glue for my bindings about 6-8 guitars ago. I have noticed some odd flaws in the finish around the binding/purfling since the switch. The guitar is pore filled with an epoxy and obviously any glued is cleaned prior to finish. But once the EM6000 is applied, I notice small areas where the finish is "rough". It can be scraped down and drop filled, but that's a lot of unnecessary work. Has anyone else noticed this sort of interaction between these materials? |

If EM6000 is water based there is a chance that it's solving the glue, perhaps just enough to give a problem at surface level. Maybe a single barrier coat of shellac will work. |

The fish glue reactivates with water -- hide glue gets sticky as well but to a different degree. As noted above, you will need some sort on non-water based sealer to prevent the problem. |

I have used fish glue for bindings with EM6000 finish with no problem. I use shellac as a final coat before spraying with EM6000. I use zpoxy to pore fill back and sides but only shellac on the top before spraying. |

Shouldn't the epoxy be a good sealer between the two? Or will it not stick to the fish glue- leaving it exposed? |

The epoxy is a good sealer but I do not use it on the top. The top is sealed only with shellac. |

Well if the epoxy is covering the Fish glue the EM6000 is reacting with the epoxy. You can't have it both ways, it's reacting to one or the other. It makes more sense that it's reacting with the Fish glue, being water based. I suspect that the areas where it is reacting are the areas that aren't fully covered by the epoxy. |

Thought I would update this subject. On my most recent guitar I added 2 coats of 2lb cut shellac as a sealer to make sure I had a barrier between the fish glue and the em6000. It worked. I have no reaction areas anywhere on the guitar. |

As well as being great for sealing binding channels or rosettes cavities so CA doesn't wick into end grain, sealing benches etc. But yes, mostly that the dewaxed stuff is a great sealer. |
